Traveling and Need to Renew Registration that Requires Smog Check
My parents are currently traveling cross country with a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, with tags that expire September 2017. I already renewed their registration online and paid the DMV fees, however they also require a smog check. I found that we need to fill out a Reg 5103 form, however it says it would take over 30 days and would send the tags to their home in Tustin, CA, which wouldn't help them across the country. They already received one ticket just yesterday in New Jersey for having "expired registration" even though it's still September. Is there any way to get the Reg 5103 form filled and submitted sooner even after I already paid the registration? They are on travel for at least another 3-4 weeks.
Answer
We can help your parents. We only need to know the exact date on which the registration was paid to the DMV in order to clear the current RDF (Report of Deposit of Fees) from the system and issue you renewed registration with an out of state smog check exemption. We'll also be able to mail the new registration card and sticker to any address, the same-day as you provide us with an emailed copy of the REG 5103.
If you are interested in proceeding, please contact one of our DMV agents to learn the exact fees involved with this specific transaction. We'll need to process this order by phone. Our online system will not recognize this transaction by your license plate number since fees have already been paid to the DMV.
